Association of chromospheric sunspot umbral oscillations and running penumbral waves I. Morphological study

چکیده
Observations of a sunspot region located near the center of the solar disk were obtained on October 3, 1994, with the Multichannel Subtractive Double Pass Spectrograph (MSDP). This instrument, operating in Hα, was installed at the focus of the VTT at Tenerife (Canary Islands) and provided Hα intensity profiles at every pixel of the field of view. Reconstruction of the Hα profile allowed the computation of two dimensional intensity and Doppler velocity images at different wavelengths within the line. We analyse a time series of 1 hour and 8 min, obtained with a cadence of 36 sec and investigate the relation between umbral oscillations and running penumbral waves. The Doppler velocity as a function of time, along radial cuts through the center of the spot, shows several clear cases where waves that originate inside the umbra continue to propagate in the penumbra. In one case we were able to follow the evolution of an oscillating element for 216 sec, from the inner part of the umbra to the penumbra and we describe the propagation characteristics. We confirm the close association between sunspot oscillations and running penumbral waves and suggest that they are probably due to the same resonator.

The Nature of Running Penumbral Waves Revealed
We seek to clarify the nature of running penumbral (RP) waves: are they chromospheric trans-sunspot waves or a visual pattern of upward-propagating waves? Full Stokes spectropolarimetric time series of the photospheric Si i 10827 Å line and the chromospheric He i 10830 Å multiplet were inverted using a MilneEddington atmosphere. Spatial pixels were paired between the outer umbral/inner penumbra...
متن کاملObservations of Running Waves in a Sunspot Chromosphere
Spectropolarimetric time series data of the primary spot of active region NOAA 9448 were obtained in the Si i 10827 Å line and the He i 10830 Å multiplet with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter. Throughout the time series the spectrograph slit was fixed over a region covering umbra, a light bridge, penumbra, and quiet sun. We present speeds of running penumbral waves in the chromosphere, their r...
متن کاملOscillations and running waves observed in sunspots
In order to study umbral oscillations, running penumbral waves and the relationship between them, we analyzed CCD, high resolution, sunspot observations obtained at center and the wings of the Hα line and the Fe I 5576 Å line. The UBF filter was used in order to produce high cadence sequences of filtergrams. Images were processed to remove the sharp intensity gradient between the umbra and the ...
متن کاملO ct 2 01 6 High resolution He I 10830 Å narrow - band imaging of an M - class flare . I - analysis of sunspot dynamics during flaring
In this paper, we report our first-step results of high resolution He i 10830 Å narrow-band imaging (bandpass: 0.5 Å) of an M1.8 class two-ribbon flare on July 5, 2012. The flare was observed with the 1.6 meter aperture New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory. For this unique data set, sunspot dynamics during flaring were analyzed for the first time. By directly imaging the upper chro...
متن کاملSimulations of waves in sunspots
Magnetic field modifies the properties of waves in a complex way. Significant advances has been made recently in our understanding of the physics of waves in solar active regions with the help of analytical theories, numerical simulations, as well as hi-resolution observations. In this contribution we review the current ideas in the field, with the emphasis on theoretical models of waves in sun...
